W 2001/2002 zmiana nazwy na: Max-Planck-Institut für Geistiges Eigentum, Wettbewerbs- und Steuerrecht. Od 1 stycznia 2011 nastąpiła reorganizacja i Instytut zmienił nazwę na: Max-Planck-Institut für Immaterialgüter-, und Wettbewerbsrecht. Od 2014 zmiana nazwy na Max-Planck-Institut für Innovation und Wettbewerb.
